20 × 27 cm – the Swedish fika tray

In Germany, a 20 × 27 cm tray might at first seem unusually small. In Sweden, however, this size is a classic and is closely linked to fika culture.

Fika means much more than just a coffee break. It's about taking time for coffee or tea, some pastries, and a small break from everyday life. This is exactly what makes this size so practical: a cup and a piece of cake, a cinnamon roll, or a small breakfast all fit on it together.

Tray and plate in one

The special thing about these Swedish trays is their dual function. While God Jul is naturally suited for carrying cups and pastries, its hard, easy-care surface means the tray can just as easily be used directly as a placemat or a small serving platter.

This means you don't necessarily have to place an extra plate on the table after transporting your items. Breakfast, cake, or a small snack can be served directly on or with the tray.

The flat shape also makes it easy and space-saving to stack multiple trays – a good example of how functionality is an integral part of Scandinavian design.

God Jul – Christmas, Swedish style

"God Jul" means "Merry Christmas" in Swedish. Bengt & Lotta combine traditional Christmas motifs with their own clear and humorous design language.

This makes the small tray particularly well-suited for an Advent breakfast or a Christmas fika with coffee, tea, cinnamon rolls, or Christmas cookies.

A small God Jul series

At Nordlichttraum, we intentionally stock the God Jul design across several coordinated products. In addition to this 20 × 27 cm fika tray, there is a round tray with a 31 cm diameter and a 20 × 40 cm cutting and serving board. The same motif can also be found on the God Jul table runner by Klippan Yllefabrik.

This allows the individual products to be combined with one another – from breakfast to coffee breaks and a festive holiday table.

My assessment

As a German customer, you might first need to get used to the 20 × 27 cm size. If you automatically think of a large serving tray, you might initially find it too small. But that is not what it is intended for at all.

I find the size extremely practical for a personal fika tray: a cup, some pastries, or a small breakfast fit on it, the tray can serve as a placemat, and afterward, it can simply go in the dishwasher. For me, this is a wonderful example of how good Scandinavian design works not just through its aesthetics, but above all through its daily utility.
