One board – multiple functions

The Fruits board beautifully illustrates a core concept of Scandinavian design: an object should not only look good, but also function as sensibly as possible in everyday life.

Measuring 20 × 40 cm, the board provides ample space for cutting and preparing food. At the same time, it can be used as a breakfast board or directly as a serving board for bread, cheese, fruit, and other small items. The hard, laminated surface is easy to care for and dishwasher safe.

The hole at the end of the board is also practical: instead of taking up space in a drawer, the board can simply be hung on a hook.

Practical even when space is limited

Especially in small kitchens, vacation homes, or campers, items that can perform multiple tasks are attractive. The Fruits board can be used for preparation, dining, and serving, and subsequently hung up to save space.

This multi-functionality is much more interesting to me than a kitchen accessory that is primarily decorative.

Fruits – fruit as a graphic pattern

Bengt & Lotta reduce apples, pears, and other fruits to simple graphic shapes and bold colors. This makes the motif look playful while remaining clear and typically Scandinavian.

Fruits is not limited to this cutting board. Bengt & Lotta also use the motif for trays and coasters. In this way, different functional kitchen and table accessories can be combined with the same design.

From design to Swedish everyday object

Bengt Lindberg and Lotta Glave are graphic designers and illustrators. Many of their motifs originate as drawings and are subsequently transferred to a wide variety of materials and products – from textiles and metal objects to these laminated wood products.

With the Fruits board, this graphic work meets a particularly typical Scandinavian everyday object: a robust board that is not limited to a single use.

My assessment

With this product, I find the function to be at least as important as the Fruits motif. A board for cutting, breakfast, and serving that can then go into the dishwasher and subsequently be stored on a hook is simply well thought-out.

At 460 g, it is not a feather-light decorative board. Especially when buying online, I consider this information important because it gives the customer at least an idea of what they will actually be holding in their hands.
