The Town Musicians of Bremen, interpreted in Swedish

A donkey carries a dog, a cat stands on top of that, and the rooster sits at the very top: With the Donkey Pyramid, Bengt & Lotta capture the most famous scene from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale "The Town Musicians of Bremen."

Instead of depicting the four animals in detail, Bengt & Lotta reduce them to their black silhouettes. Nevertheless, you can immediately recognize the donkey, dog, cat, and rooster—and, of course, the characteristic animal pyramid.

Four animals become a candle holder

The special thing about the Donkey Pyramid is the combination of motif and function. The stacked animals together form the shape of the candle holder. This makes the design look like a small graphic object even without a candle.

With a candle, the animal pyramid becomes part of the table or living room lighting. The black silhouette looks especially effective against a light-colored wall.

20 cm high and solidly crafted

With a height of 20 cm and a width of 15 cm, the Donkey Pyramid remains compact enough for a table, sideboard, windowsill, or shelf. At the same time, the motif is large enough for the four animals to be clearly recognized.

The weight of 770 g gives a good impression of the build quality when buying online: despite the graphically light silhouette, this is a solid metal candle holder.

A Swedish design with German history

I find the connection in this particular Bengt & Lotta design interesting: A Swedish designer duo interprets one of the most famous German fairy tales using their own graphic design language.

This makes the Donkey Pyramid interesting not only for fans of Scandinavian design, but also a lovely gift for people who have a connection to the Town Musicians of Bremen.

My assessment

For me, the Donkey Pyramid is one of the most humorous candle holders by Bengt & Lotta. You recognize the Town Musicians of Bremen immediately, even though the four animals have been reduced to the essentials.

I particularly like that the design requires no additional decoration. The famous animal pyramid is already strong enough on its own. That is exactly why I wouldn't embellish it in the product text with Swedish forest stories – the donkey, dog, cat, and rooster tell their own story.
