The angel with which Lotta’s design history began

The angel is one of the motifs closely linked to the history of Bengt & Lotta. After Bengt Lindberg had started with his animal figures, he asked Lotta Glave to draw an angel. From this drawing, one of her most well-known motifs evolved.

The angel was not limited to the candle holder. Like Bengt’s animals, Lotta’s design found its way onto other products – from Christmas ornaments and jewelry to textiles. This very practice of re-imagining a graphic motif across different materials and products is typical of Bengt & Lotta.

Four angels – four candles

With the Angels candle holder, four angels stand side by side, each carrying a candle. At 35 cm wide and weighing 1,700 g, the candle holder is a truly striking home accessory that looks especially good on a dining table, sideboard, windowsill, or fireplace mantel.

The black silhouette creates a strong contrast to bright candles. Especially with four white taper candles, it creates a very clean, typical Scandinavian look.

Not just for Christmas

Four candles naturally make the Angels candle holder particularly interesting for the Advent season. Nevertheless, it is not a classic Advent wreath and certainly not exclusively Christmas decoration. The reduced depiction of the angels also works as a graphic home object.

As a result, the candle holder can remain out beyond the Christmas season – for instance, with candles for a festively set table or entirely without candles as a black silhouette.

Bengt & Lotta – two different artistic styles

Bengt Lindberg and Lotta Glave met during their studies in graphic design and illustration in Stockholm. While Bengt’s early designs were primarily characterized by his cow, the horse, and the later famous moose, Lotta developed her own imagery with her angel.

Today, many of the patterns by Bengt & Lotta come from Lotta Glave. Humor, clear graphic forms, and motifs that possess personality despite their simplicity unite the work of both.

My assessment

For me, the Angels candle holder is more than just a beautiful Christmas candelabra. Much like Bengt’s moose, it tells a part of the story of Bengt & Lotta – only from Lotta’s perspective.

I also find the weight of 1,700 g to be an important piece of information for an online purchase. After all, you cannot pick up the candle holder beforehand. The figure conveys much better that you are dealing with a solid metal object here and not just a lightweight decoration.
