The moose that made Bengt Lindberg famous
The story of Bengt & Lotta did not begin with a large collection. Bengt Lindberg's first three-dimensional design was a cow-shaped candle holder. A sheep, a horse, and finally the moose followed.
The moose, in particular, became one of his most famous designs. In the early 1990s, Bengt's graphically simplified depiction met with great enthusiasm for moose and Sweden – not least among German tourists visiting Scandinavia. The original design developed into a motif that has accompanied Bengt & Lotta to this day.
From candle holder to trademark
What is special about the Bengt & Lotta moose is its reduction. The antlers, body, and legs consist of a few clear shapes, yet the figure is recognizable as a moose at first glance. This very mix of Swedish folk art, graphics, and a good dose of humor characterizes many of Bengt Lindberg's works.
The moose, therefore, was not limited to candle holders. The motif and its further developments can now be found on numerous products – from home accessories to textiles created in collaboration with Klippan Yllefabrik.
Small, but not just Christmas decoration
At only 9 cm in height, the mini moose is deliberately compact. It fits on a small shelf, side table, or windowsill and can easily be combined with other Scandinavian home accessories.
Small tree candles are required for the candle holder. This keeps the proportion between the candle and the 9 cm tall figure harmonious.
My assessment
If you want to get to know Bengt & Lotta, I would actually start with the moose. The figure shows very well what defines Bengt Lindberg's designs: few lines, an instantly recognizable silhouette, and a bit of humor.
I also like that the little moose is not limited to Christmas. Without a candle, it works almost like a small black metal sculpture. For fans of Sweden and moose, it is, of course, an obvious choice – but the long history of the motif makes it more interesting to me than just any random moose decoration.
