A Wool Mill with Character: The Beginning in 1879

It all began in the small Southern Swedish village of Klippan, located in historic Scania, just a stone's throw from Helsingborg. Here, in 1879, young master spinner Jöns Petter Magnusson took over a modest wool mill – founded with raw wool, craftsmanship, and a firm determination to produce textiles of the highest quality. What started as a small operation on Eisenbahnstraße is still run by the Magnusson family today – now in its fourth and fifth generations.

His son Gustaf soon expanded the mill to include its own dye works and established contacts with the burgeoning Swedish craft movement. When he died in 1918 at the age of just 30 from the Spanish Flu, his widow Greta took over the management – with two small children and a third on the way. It is this perseverance across generations and crises that still defines Klippan today.

The Turning Point: From Yarn Seller to Blanket Weaver

Until the 1980s, Klippan primarily sold yarn to other manufacturers. But growing international competition plunged the company, under Gösta Magnusson, into a serious crisis – the workforce dwindled to just 30 employees. The decisive turning point came in 1992: Klippan entered into a joint venture with a weaving mill in Riga, Latvia, which specialized in the production of wool blankets. In 1997, the factory was fully acquired.

This crisis led to one of the smartest strategic decisions in the company's history: Instead of continuing to just sell yarn, Klippan used its decades of knowledge about wool to create something special from it themselves. The yarn manufacturer became a blanket weaver – and a regional spinning mill became an internationally sought-after brand.

Craftsmanship You Can See – and Feel

To this day, everything at Klippan comes together under one roof: from the careful selection of raw materials to spinning and dyeing, all the way to the finished weaving in their own factory in Latvia. This complete traceability has become rare in the textile industry – and that is precisely what makes every Klippan blanket a piece of honest craftsmanship.

Only natural materials are processed: lamb's wool, often from certified organic farming, merino wool, cotton, and linen. Wherever possible, Klippan relies on ecological qualities and works without chlorine bleaching or harmful chemicals. The company demonstrated how serious it was about this with a self-experiment: In 2021, Klippan buried its own wool blankets in a farm's soil for a year to prove how residue-free and natural their products truly are.

Design Rooted in Nature

Klippan's distinctive patterns are created in collaboration with renowned Swedish designers such as Birgitta Bengtsson Björk or Bengt Lindberg – names that stand for timeless Scandinavian design. Plaid stripes, soft chevron zig-zag patterns, earthy natural tones: Each blanket tells a story of the landscape it comes from – of Swedish forests, autumn leaves, and the subdued light of Nordic winters.
